CHARACTER INFORMATION
Real Name: Nuray (Turkish; Bright Moon)
Nicknames/Aliases: Nuray Masterson [Nuray uses Jay's last name since it is expected in human society that a person have one.]
Species: Mermaid (saltwater born)
Gender: Female
Age: 30

Physical Description: 5' 7", 140 pounds. Warm skin that gives away her nearly Middle Eastern descent. One of the most striking features about her are her eyes that seem to just look right through you. Though when she smiles, suddenly all the intensity in that gaze turns into a kind of welcoming joviality. Her body has been toned over the years by many, many miles of swimming. She tends to wear her hair long, excessively long according to some, but it's a sheen of black and a vanity that she absolutely refuses to give up, whether under water or on land.

When she transforms into her mermaid form by being submerged in water, Nuray, of course, has the long tail and well developed fins. Her scales, which come part of the way up her spine from her tail, are a matte brown/black color. Her long fingers develop webs to help pull her through the water and she even pulls slight fins along her arms from the wrists to her elbows. Her gills appear as slits on either side of her throat. If it were anywhere other than underwater, she would probably be rushed to the emergency room with what looks like life threatening injuries.

Unique Features: N/A
Date of Birth: January 3, 1977
Birth Location: The Mediterranean Sea just off of Alanya, Turkey.
Blood Family: Father: Alp | Mother: Sevda | Brothers: Soner (o) & Serhat (y) | Sisters: Tulay (y) & Esen (y) All still alive in various places in the world.
Adoptive Family: Captain Jay Masterson [Her human teacher]
Residence: Forest Cottages since they are closer to the saltwater lake.
Residing With: Jay Masterson
Profession(s) Held: Ship's Navigator
Employment: The Docks
Physical Strengths: Breathing underwater. Enhanced endurance. Exceptional eyesight underwater.
Physical Weaknesses: Dehydrates quickly.
Magical Abilities: Typical abilities for a merperson and an innate ability to tell direction on a body of water.
Personal Skills & Training: Underwater archeology. Reads/Writes/Speak Turkish, English, and Arabic (primarily Egyptian), reads ancient hieroglyphics.
Personal Weaknesses: Out of touch with reality at times, tendency to get herself caught up reading for ages.

Personality: Curiosity killed the cat and satisfaction brought it back. The quote essentially sums up Nuray's personality. Everything that is, is meant to be done. Not necessarily more than once, but you never know what it's like unless you try it. A bundle of barely restrained energy, Nuray is capable of seeing a great many things through. Her indomitable energy makes her popular in groups. A kind of dance on the table and not care who sees kind of woman. Perhaps a direct reaction to the provincialism that she was taught by her parents. This is not to say that she doesn't have a serious side, it will come out when it's important. Now, what she considers important versus what is considered important to other people is somewhat different. She was taught early on that mourning is a short term affair and celebration of the life lived should last as long as the life that you continue to live left behind.

New people are just friends that she hasn't met yet. Enemies a concept that she barely understands. She seems to be incapable of holding a grudge. Nuray is her name, a bright moon that reflects nothing but beauty onto the world around her.

History: Alp met Sveda sitting on the beach in Alanya and was immediately struck by the strength of her eyes. It would take ten years, repeated returns to that very beach and many trinkets before he managed to win the heart of his chosen, only to find when he revealed himself for what he was that he had courted and finally won another mer-person to his side. Unexpected, but he couldn't be more happy as she understood the inexplicable power that the sea held over him. The two would spend many years together before the birth of their first child, their son Soner, was born. Soner would be the first of the children, which would be a total of five. Nuray was the first girl. Of the five children, most seemed to share their mother's placid nature.

Nuray, unfortunately, had no such luck. She was the closest to their mother in looks, but the furthest from her in personality. Where Sveda was content to remain in the same area where she was born, Nuray wanted to see beyond the resort town where she was born. Considering the perils that merpeople faced now with pollutants and fishing practices, it was hardly surprising that her family preferred for her to stay near where they knew it to be safe. Not to mention, the beach front resorts gave them ample haunts to disappear into if it became necessary that they had to leave the sea itself for a little while. The little mermaid was not content with these safe ideas though, deciding instead to seek her own fortune. At the tender age of ten, she ran away for the first time, heading out into the deeper waters away from the coast and met her first deep sea diver face to face.

James 'Jay' Masterson was a man in his 20's when he met Nuray the first time, though he had absolutely no idea that he had met her. All he remembered seeing was what might have been a shadow of a human shape that disappeared so quickly that he could hardly believe that he had seen it at all. A trick of some seaweed moving maybe. Well, that was what he had assured himself of when he got back up onto his boat. He had been on an expedition in the Mediterranean Sea just because he wanted to go. He was already starting to fall in love with the sea. Little was he to know that he would be back, years later and that same body that he had imagined seeing in the dark would change his life. He returned to New York and the history degree he had been pursuing. Nuray was dragged back to Turkey by her Father who was less than impressed with the idea of her running off on her own at such an age.

However, Alp knew his daughter well enough to know that she would never stay home unless given some freedom. With that understanding in his heart, he offered her a deal. She would remain near the shores until her 20th year. After that, she could disappear into the deep waters with his blessing to seek whatever it was that she thought that she would find there. It made Sveda unhappy, but even she understood that to deny their daughter the chance to see the world was to deny her air. Either action would surely kill her. So Sveda agreed with her husband despite her fears and tears. They would let her go, as soon as she was old enough. Nuray kept her word, she waited until she was old enough to go. The last memory she has of her family is of kissing them good-bye before she took off to see what was out in the world.

It was in Cairo that she met Jay Masterson again. He was finishing up an unremarkable career as an Egyptologist and just beginning what would become the obsession of his life, undersea treasure. He was convinced that there were great treasures of historical significance at the bottom of the Mediterranean that had yet to be found. He was in the market haggling with a man to work as his navigator/pilot on the boat that he had. All the equipment, he just needed another set of hands. Watching him walk away in disgust, Nuray followed and eventually offered him her services. Trapped on a boat, just the two of them, and she had to keep the secret of what she was; unsure of how it was that he would react.

The arrangement stayed that way for a year. She didn't get into the water around him, but rather waited until he was sound asleep to indulge her craving to dip into the sea. Luck appeared to be on her side. That was until the day that he didn't come back up at the agreed upon time. She waited 10 minutes, certain that something was wrong. Then she dove over the side and went looking for him, oblivious to the fact that her tail and fins appeared immediately. She wasn't going to let him drown to keep a secret. Not the man who had become her best friend.

She found him caught at the bottom, unconscious. A rock had landed on him, keeping him from floating to the top. As she pulled to try and dislodge the rock, he woke up and they locked eyes. He pushed, helping as best he could though he had been underwater for far too long. Getting him back onto the boat, she left him there, sinking back into the water.

Two nights later, she returned to find him sitting on the edge of the boat, his feet dangling in the water. "Can I see what you really look like?," he was almost shy about it when he asked. Nuray ducked back under the water for a moment, then waved him in. He hopped in and swam easily in the calm water. She swam around him, letting the edges of her fins trail against his skin.

"I never dreamed," he still didn't remember her from the first encounter though she did remember him, if only vaguely.

The two would spend the better part of the next nine years just the two of them together on a boat. Jay teaching Nuray as much as he knew about history and anything else that he could think of. That was until Jay's family reached out to him about PV. Pandora brought them back on land for the first time in years for an extended period of time, mostly to reconnect with Jay's family who erroneously thought that Nuray was his wife and he didn't correct them because it would have been too much explaining for him at the time, and to attend funerals. Nuray had never been to a human funeral and it was hard for her to watch Jay cry.

Three weeks later, Jay made the decision that would change their lives. The decision was partially caused by necessity. They were nearly out of fuel. They put in along the coast of Greece. Where were they going to go? They weren't quite sure. The sweepers were on their way out, looking for survivors when they came across the two headed inland and one of their party decided to lead them back to Elysium.

Sample 3rd Person Entry: "You're going to have to learn how to hold your breath," Nuray urged him as she laid in the water on her back, her body was so completely different when she was in the water. Jay was sitting on the launcher, his legs in the water up to his knees looking at her. He shook his head at the thought.

"No human being is going to be able to hold their breath long enough to truly make a good inspection of what's down there," he indicated the deep water with a sweep of his hand. Then he dragged that same hand through his shaggy blond hair. "Ray, it's just not possible."

"We can't refill your tank, the equipment doesn't work anymore," she flicked water at him with her tail. "Don't tell me you're too scared to try."

"You're not the one could die from the pressure," his tone was getting dangerously close to that lecturing tone he used when trying to discuss ancient political systems. She rolled dark eyes in his direction.

"You really think I would let something happen to you?" Over the last nine years, one would hope that she had earned his trust enough to not question every time she thought about doing something. He colored a little at the implication. "Well," she pushed her point a little harder, trying to get him to actually say what was bothering him.

"Well, no," he finally admitted, kicking his feet in the water. "It's just that..." he let the sentence trail off without finishing.

"Jay," she turned over and grabbed a hold of the boat, hands on either side of his legs. Blinking, she tried to make sense of his sudden nervousness.

"You shouldn't have to be the one looking out for me." he started to get up and she grabbed a hold of his ankle, bodily pulling him into the water. The man only barely missed knocking his head on the launch.

"Jay Masterson," she smiled at him. "I'm a swimmer. You're a swimmer. We look out for each other." He was sputtering and wiping his hair out of his eyes as she spoke. Then she leaned forward and kissed him soundly. "So take a deep breath and let's go."
